We see a lot of things go on in the concrete construction industry.
For example, we see curing compounds go on – and then have to come off again later.
Many curing compounds are supposed to break down with UV light, but it’s rarely fully effective. And residue left on the concrete surface is not ideal for concrete sealers that will be applied towards the end of the project.
So here’s the timeline:
- Early in the project, at time of concrete pour, a curing compound is applied.
- Late in the project, the whole residue of that compound must be mechanically removed.
- Then the sealer can be applied.
That’s three action points – three times the slab needs to be worked over.
What’s driving this inefficiency?
The challenge here is that two separate parties are looking after the process – one at the start and the other at the end. The contractor applying the curing compound has no interest in the process required to apply the sealer.
The result is an added cost the principal contractor needs to allow for.
An unnecessary cost
With a little big-picture thinking, a layer or two of cost can be completely removed.
- There is a curing treatment that does not need removal later in the project.
- There is a curing treatment which also seals the concrete, removing the need for the added cost of the sealer itself.
- This treatment strengthens the concrete from within, making it better-wearing and less prone to shrinkage cracking.
