Adding Life to Concrete – How MARKHAM applied hydrogel waterproofing systems to a new multi-storey car park structure at Arle Court Transport Hub in Cheltenham, England.
OBJECTIVE
Reinforced concrete decks exposed to atmospheric conditions and vehicular traffic require robust protection against water and chloride ingress. The primary need for this structure was a durable waterproofing solution that protected the concrete at all four levels of this structure from environmental damage, accommodating winter de-icing salts and requiring minimum maintenance to ensure the decks remain functional through all seasons for many years to come.
SOLUTION
MARKHAM was able to assist with a holistic three-part system. The concrete itself was made waterproof by including AQURON 300 admixture in the mix design and AQURON 2000 spray applied treatment. All electrical and drainage penetrations in the decks, and the edge kerb upstands on the decks were sealed with CONQOR 47B delayed swell waterstop gasket.
RESULTS
The inclusion of AQURON 300 in the concrete at mixing stage and the treatment of the concrete with AQURON 2000 the day after placement meant that the waterproofing process was going on concurrently with the pour schedule. This removed the delays typically encountered with the application of a multi-coat membrane system.
Sealing all penetrations and kerb upstands using CONQOR 47B meant that MARKHAM’S waterproofing solution was contiguous across the whole of the four deck areas of this structure.
As the waterproofing solution is included right through the full depth of the concrete, this means that it is in place for the lifespan of the concrete and will not require any reapplication or ongoing maintenance. Both AQURON 300 and AQURON 2000 are fully compatible with any form of line marking / road signage meaning that there was no adverse effect / change required to the marking out process for these four deck levels.

BUDGET
Significant Savings
By opting for this solution, the client achieved substantial cost savings compared to the original specified solution.
This means more funds can be allocated to other critical areas of the project, enhancing overall project value and efficiency.
PROGRAM
Weather-Independent Application
Unlike traditional methods that require prolonged dry weather, this solution can be applied regardless of weather conditions. This ensures that the project stays on schedule, avoiding costly delays and ensuring timely completion.
PROTECTION
Long-Lasting Waterproof Barrier
The internal system creates a robust waterproof barrier throughout the entire slab.
Unlike surface treatments that can wear down over time, this barrier remains effective, providing consistent protection against water damage and extending the lifespan of the structure.
ASSURANCE
25-Year Waterproofing Warranty
The system comes with a comprehensive 25-year warranty from a single source. This long-term assurance gives clients peace of mind, knowing that their investment is protected and that any potential issues will be covered.
ENVIRONMENT
Low Environmental Impact
AQURON is certified as VOC-free and has a significantly lower CO2 footprint per square meter of protected concrete compared to traditional methods. This makes it an eco-friendly choice, contributing to sustainability goals and reducing the project’s overall environmental impact.
Project Details – Arle Court Transport Hub | |
Description | A new multi-storey car park structure requiring waterproofing to the three suspended deck levels and the Ground Floor slab |
Area Treated | 23,350m² |
Age of Structure | New (2024) |
Requirements | Waterproofing Concrete Curing Slab Sealing and anti-dust hardening Penetrations sealant Zero maintenance Compatible with line marking |
Operation Downtime / Interruptions | As the AQURON 300 was being included in the concrete mix and the AQURON 2000 was applied the day after concrete placement, the treatment works ran simultaneously with the pour schedule meaning that there was no delay / interruption to the construction schedule. It in fact removed a large potential delay that could have been incurred if a multi-layer membrane had been used instead. |
Application Method | Medium Pressure Boom and Back-Pack Sprayers |
Proposed Further Works | No further works required. |
OHS Requirements | AQURON is nil VOC. Minimal PPE required. |
