Adding Life to Concrete – How MARKHAM applied hydrogel waterproofing systems to Berth 34 in Dublin Port, Ireland.
OBJECTIVE
MARKHAM were tasked with providing a waterproofing and reinforcement bar protection system for sections of the new concrete forming the area known as Berth 34 in Dublin Port. While the concrete was new, there had been some issues with placement of the concrete and consequently some quite significant cracking had occurred in the new concrete. To provide some form of remediation to this situation, the MARKHAM objective was to provide a waterproofing solution that would provide protection of the concrete from the ingress of water and salts and to protect the reinforcement bar from corrosion as a result of this ingress.
SOLUTION
The MARKHAM system put forward to achieve these goals was the spray application of AQURON 7000. This retro spray application provides a waterproofing solution that penetrates up to 150mm into the concrete, and contains a Migrating Corrosion Inhibitor (MCI) that will penetrate to the same depth to protect the steel reinforcement within the dock structure.
RESULTS
As a VOC Free, Non-Hazardous, DWI Reg 21 approved product, suitable for use in locations used for the storage of potable water, AQURON 7000 was a very rapid and cost-effective solution for waterproofing the concrete dock area, without any risk of contaminating the surrounding water.
It not only removed a significant cost element of breaking out the cracked concrete and replacing it with fresh concrete, it also removed any requirement to halt the normal container shipping program within this busy dockside area. This meant that there was no impact on the normal operation of the port which otherwise have potentially had significant revenue losses to the Port Authority.
As AQURON 7000 is a product that penetrates deep into the concrete matrix, there are no ongoing maintenance requirements or operation costs making this solution a very attractive proposition in terms of the ongoing maintenance requirement of this extremely busy dockside area.
With this depth of penetration, the AQURON 7000 is present within the matrix of the concrete for the lifespan of the concrete, making it a maintenance free solution that won’t require any further applications.
