Adding Life to Concrete – How MARKHAM applied hydrogel waterproofing systems to the Chemical Storage Tank Bunds at Witches Oak Water Treatment works in Church Wilne, Derbyshire.
OBJECTIVE
The construction of concrete bunds around and beneath chemical storage tanks is common practice in the water treatment industry. There is always an associated challenge with this in terms of protecting the concrete bund structure from the ingress of water and chemicals.
Consequently, the objective here was to enhance the durability and increase the lifespan of these bund structures and, probably most importantly, protect the concrete against chemical attack from potential spillages or leaks.
SOLUTION
The MARKHAM approach put forward to achieve these goals was the spray application of AQURON 2000. This retro spray application provides a waterproofing solution that penetrates up to 150mm into the concrete, replacing the more traditional epoxy coating systems
RESULTS
As a DWI Reg 21 approved product, suitable for use in locations used for the storage of potable water, AQURON 2000 was a very rapid and cost-effective solution for waterproofing the concrete Bund structures at this water treatment works.
It not only removed a significant cost element of the materials for an epoxy coating solution, it also removed the labour time/cost requirement for the main contractor, assisting them to keep ahead of their construction program.
The fact that AQURON 2000 can be applied to damp concrete and in relatively poor weather conditions is a significant advantage over the application conditions required for an epoxy coating process.
With this depth of penetration, the AQURON 2000 is present within the matrix of the concrete for the lifespan of the concrete, making it a maintenance-free solution that won’t require any further applications.

Project Details – Witches Oak Water Treatment Works | |
Description | Concrete Bund structures requiring protection to walls, tank plinths and floor slabs |
Area Treated | 995 m² split across four different Bund Structures |
Age of Structure | New (2024) |
Requirements | Waterproofing Concrete sealing and anti-dust hardening Zero maintenance DWI REG-31 compliant |
Operation Downtime / Interruptions | All walls, plinths and floor slabs were treated in situ after construction was completed, meaning that there was no interruption to the construction phases of the project. The construction program time was in fact reduced by the removal of the time that would have been taken in preparing for and installing epoxy coatings. |
Application Method | Medium Pressure Backpack Sprayer |
