Adding Life to Concrete – How MARKHAM applied hydrogel waterproofing systems to Havre des Pas Lido Sea Wall in St Helier, Jersey.
OBJECTIVE
MARKHAM were tasked with providing a waterproofing and durability enhancement system for 130 year old concrete capped sea wall structure in St Helier, Jersey. This was part of an overall refurbishment program on the concrete capping of the wall which was undertaken due to the concrete having been attacked extensively by Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) which had caused a lot of damage to the structure.
Halting existing and limiting further degradation to the concrete was the key objective with this project.
SOLUTION
The MARKHAM product put forward to achieve these goals was the spray application of AQURON 2000. This retro spray application provided a solution that penetrates up to 150mm into the concrete, providing a lasting protection against ASR to this historical and popular piece of infrastructure.
RESULTS
As a VOC Free, Non-Hazardous, DWI Reg 21 approved product, suitable for use in locations used for the storage of potable water, AQURON 2000 was a very rapid and cost-effective solution for waterproofing the concrete capping, without any risk of contaminating the coastal environment, without causing any potential damage to surrounding eco systems and most importantly, not contaminating the water in the pool, as this remained in use by the public, even while AQURON 2000 application works were proceeding.
The application of AQURON 2000 is very “surface condition tolerant” and made it an ideal solution for application in this location given the fact that the structure is covered by sea water at every high tide, and the very changeable nature of the weather in this location. AQURON products can be applied to damp concrete which meant that, application could go ahead immediately after the tide level had dropped enough to allow access onto the wall.
As AQURON 2000 is a product that penetrates deep into the concrete matrix, there are no ongoing maintenance requirements or operation costs making this solution a very attractive proposition in terms of the ongoing maintenance costs of the coastal wall structure.
With this depth of penetration, the AQURON 2000 is present within the matrix of the concrete for the lifespan of the concrete, making it a maintenance free solution that won’t require any further applications.
