Adding Life to Concrete – How MARKHAM applied hydrogel waterproofing systems to two new multi-storey car park structures at a Panattoni site in Avonmouth, England.
OBJECTIVE
The more traditional multi-coat deck membrane that this type of deck structure would normally be sealed with presents a number of challenges, being significantly impacted by poor weather conditions and delays waiting for the appropriate level of concrete cure.
MARKHAM were asked to provide an alternative waterproofing system to seal the top decks of these two structures. This was particularly important is the MSCP’s (multi-storied car parks) were constructed between February 2024 and June 2024.
SOLUTION
MARKHAM was able to assist with a holistic three-part system. The concrete top decks and the ramps of these two structures were made waterproof by including CONQOR B50 admixture in the mix design and AQURON 2000 spray applied treatment. All electrical and drainage penetrations in the decks, and the edge kerb upstands on the decks were sealed with CONQOR 47B delayed swell waterstop gasket.
RESULTS
The inclusion of CONQOR B50 in the concrete at mixing stage and the treatment of the concrete with AQURON 2000 the day after placement meant that the waterproofing process was going on concurrently with the pour schedule. This removed the delays typically encountered with the application of a multi-coat membrane system. The weather was very poor through the earlier stages of the construction program however, the MARKHAM waterproofing system could still be carried out through low temperatures and wet weather, delivering waterproof decks despite these weather conditions.
Sealing all penetrations and kerb upstands using CONQOR 47B meant that MARKHAM’S waterproofing solution was contiguous across the whole of the top deck areas of these structures.
As the waterproofing solution is included right through the full depth of the concrete, this means that it is in place for the lifespan of the concrete and will not require any reapplication or ongoing maintenance. Both CONQOR B50 and AQURON 2000 are fully compatible with any form of line marking / road signage meaning that there was no adverse effect / change required to the marking out process for these two deck levels.

Project Details – Panattoni Park | |
Description | Two new multi-storey car park structures requiring waterproofing to the top deck level and the ramps |
Area Treated | 14,335m² |
Age of Structure | New (2024) |
Requirements | Waterproofing Concrete Curing Slab Sealing and anti-dust hardening Penetrations sealant Zero maintenance Compatible with line marking |
Operation Downtime / Interruptions | As the CONQOR B50 was being included in the concrete mix and the AQURON 2000 was applied the day after concrete placement, the treatment works ran simultaneously with the pour schedule meaning that there was no delay / interruption to the construction schedule. It in fact removed a large potential delay that could have been incurred if a multi-layer membrane had been used instead. |
Application Method | Medium Pressure Boom and Back-Pack Sprayers |
Proposed Further Works | No further works required. |
OHS Requirements | AQURON is nil VOC. Minimal PPE required. |
