Adding Life to Concrete – How MARKHAM applied hydrogel waterproofing systems to Bunded Chemical Delivery Areas at Williamsgate Water Treatment works in Cumbria.

OBJECTIVE

These bunded chemical delivery areas had previously been coated with a chemical resistant coating. Being an external location, having the concrete dry enough to allow a successful coating application was always going to be challenged and in circa 6 months to a year, the coatings had failed / delaminated across a significant proportion of the area. MARKHAM were tasked with replacing the chemical resistance of the coating with a solution that would last. This needed to provide a level of chemical resistance to the concrete, provide a non-slip surface, enhance the durability and increase the lifespan of these delivery areas.

SOLUTION

The MARKHAM system put forward to achieve these goals was the spray application of AQURON 2000. This retro spray application provides a chemical resistant waterproofing solution that penetrates up to 150mm into the concrete.

RESULTS

As a DWI Reg 21 approved product, suitable for use in locations used for the storage of potable water, AQURON 2000 was a very rapid and cost-effective solution for treating these delivery areas.

As the AQURON 2000 product is extremely weather and substrate condition tolerant, the treatment works could go ahead, despite there having been rainfall in/on the area only the day before application.

Instead of being a coating system that relies on adhesion to the concrete for its durability, because AQURON 2000 penetrates up to the 150mm into the concrete, it cannot be removed by vehicle traffic, mechanical damage or weathering. As this area is trafficked by heavy multi-axle delivery vehicles and is open to all weathers, having a product that is protecting the concrete from the inside is a significant advantage over traditional coating systems.

With this depth of penetration, the AQURON 2000 is present within the matrix of the concrete for the lifespan of the concrete, making it a maintenance free solution that won’t require any further applications.
