Adding Life to Concrete – How MARKHAM applied hydrogel waterproofing systems to a new multi-storey car park structure at the Amazon Bognor Multi-Storey Car Park, England.
OBJECTIVE
The more traditional multi-coat deck membrane that this type of deck structure would normally be sealed with presents a number of challenges, being significantly impacted by poor weather conditions and delays waiting for the appropriate level of concrete cure.
MARKHAM were asked to provide an alternative waterproofing system to seal the top deck of this structure. This was particularly important as the Amazon Bognor Multi-Storey Car Park was constructed between November 2023 and March 2024.
Weather conditions during this period were highly unpredictable, increasing the importance of a reliable hydrogel waterproofing system.
SOLUTION
MARKHAM was able to assist with a holistic three-part hydrogel waterproofing system. The concrete top deck and the ramps at three levels of the Amazon Bognor Multi-Storey Car Park were made waterproof by including AQURON 300 admixture in the mix design and AQURON 2000 spray applied treatment.
This approach provided deep-seated protection from moisture ingress, improving concrete performance and long-term durability.
All electrical and drainage penetrations in the decks, and the edge kerb upstands on the decks were sealed with CONQOR 47B delayed swell waterstop gasket.
RESULTS
The inclusion of AQURON 300 in the concrete at mixing stage and the treatment of the concrete with AQURON 2000 the day after placement meant that the hydrogel waterproofing process was going on concurrently with the pour schedule. This removed the delays typically encountered with the application of a multi-coat membrane system. The weather was very poor throughout the majority of the construction program however, the MARKHAM hydrogel waterproofing system could still be carried out through low temperatures and wet weather, delivering a waterproof deck despite these weather conditions.
Sealing all penetrations and kerb upstands using CONQOR 47B meant that MARKHAM’s hydrogel waterproofing solution was contiguous across the whole of the top deck area of the Amazon Bognor Multi-Storey Car Park.
As the hydrogel waterproofing solution is included right through the full depth of the concrete, this means that it is in place for the lifespan of the concrete and will not require any reapplication or ongoing maintenance. Both AQURON 300 and AQURON 2000 are fully compatible with any form of line marking / road signage meaning that there was no adverse effect / change required to the marking out process for these two deck levels.
This project highlights MARKHAM’s commitment to delivering high-performing waterproofing solutions that help add life to concrete across diverse environmental conditions, ensuring lasting structural performance.

Project Details – Amazon Bognor Multi-Storey Car Park | |
Description | A new multi-storey car park structure requiring waterproofing to the top deck level and the ramps at three deck levels. |
Area Treated | 8,770m² |
Age of Structure | New (2023-24) |
Requirements | Waterproofing Concrete Curing Slab Sealing and anti-dust hardening Penetrations sealant Zero maintenance Compatible with line marking |
Operation Downtime / Interruptions | As the AQURON 300 was being included in the concrete mix and the AQURON 2000 was applied the day after concrete placement, the treatment works ran simultaneously with the pour schedule meaning that there was no delay / interruption to the construction schedule. It in fact removed a large potential delay that could have been incurred if a multi-layer membrane had been used instead. |
Application Method | Medium Pressure Boom and Back-Pack Sprayers |
Proposed Further Works | No further works required. |
OHS Requirements | AQURON is nil VOC. Minimal PPE required. |
